Upcoming release of Lotus Notes 8.5.3 has been mentioned many times during Lotusphere 2011 presentations. As the release date is scheduled for Q2/2011 we can mention now at least some of the new features, that are expected for this release.

Domino Designer new 8.5.3 features - part 1:
1. Java design element - its a new design element available under 'Code' section in Application Navigator. This design elemtn let you create single JAVA class thats available and simply callable from XPages. The idea behind this element is to let you use the normal Eclipse user interface for the Java element wherever possible. The design list is expected to have four buttons on the top: New Class, New Interface, New Enum, and Sign.

2. Source control enablement  - this feature allows Domino Designer to store NSF base design elements into a source control repositories like Subversion, Mercurial or GIT. This can be a huge improvement in LN application source management as designers can handle the source code history in very easy way. If you are new to version control system, you can look to Mercurial http://mercurial.selenic.com/ site for details what version control system really is.

3. New perpectives (perspectives are the way of how Eclipse handles the different modes of development)
a) XPages perspective
Shows only design elements necessary for XPage applications
Displays Eclipse views as needed (outline, navigator, control palette, etc)

b) Forms/Views perspective
Shows only design elements necessary for “Forms/Views” development

This feature can help to organize the designer desktop and avoid the "the all on one screen" effect.

4. Dojo 1.5 is included
The current final/stable release of Dojo is 1.6, but we are getting closer at least. You can review some new features available in  Dojo 1.5 on the site www.dojotoolkit.org or you can review API directly here http://dojotoolkit.org/api/

5. Updated JavaScript editor - the client side JavaScript editor has been replaced with the newest Web Tools Platform editor available in Eclipse 3.4.2

DISCLAIMER: The final product can differ from features described in this article, depending on what will be included into final GOLD release.
